Tips on Saving Gas
Those of us here at Bicycle City can’t wait until the day
when articles like this aren’t necessary, but it’s a fact of life that we all
consume gas and we all want to consume less. So today CNN
offers tips on saving gas, a few of which I am relating to help you all
save some money (and emissions!):
- Pick the right car. If you’re
traveling with a group, one guzzling SUV beats two fuel-efficient compact
cars in a heartbeat. - Pack lightly. Every 100
pounds knocks 2% off of your fuel economy. Also, using roof bins and racks
can cut your mpg by 21%. I can attest to this. I average as much as 38 mpg
on the highway, but on a recent road trip with two bikes on the car, I
only got 26 mpg – worse than my average city mpg. - Use cruise control. On
most flat roads, cruise control can save you as much as 15% on your fuel
economy and might spare you a speeding ticket, so long as you’ve got it
set for the right speed. - Don’t drive too fast.
Every additional 10 mpg reduces your fuel economy by 15% to 20%. Stick to
the speed limit. - Chill out. Aggressive driving
and braking wastes a lot of gas, knocking your efficiency by as much as
25%. - Idle as little as
possible. Drive through lanes and congested traffic areas are tough on
your fuel economy. Avoid it as much as possible.
