Warning of Tragic Inaction
Rajendra Pachauri, head of the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change, has described the lack of effort to combat climate change as
tragic, described in an article
on CNN.com. He warns of a destabilization of human society if no action is
taken immediately. He is frustrated by the lack of action on the part of
developed countries, who were to set examples for other nations. This article
does point out that standards set by the Kyoto Protocol weren’t ratified till
2005, so we could theorize that three years isn’t enough time to make real
progress. But considering scientists were talking about a man-made greenhouse
gas effect as early as 1896, significant action is long overdue. When the
future of our planet and humanity is at stake, I don’t ever want to hear the
word tragic used. I don’t really want to hear words that relate to relaxing the
endangered species act or drilling for more oil, either. The only better word I
can think of is stupid.
Tragically stupid.
